Broadway Update – October 2017
Let it go! Move over HAMILTON, the Ice Princess is coming to NYC! The highly anticipated musical FROZEN takes over the St. James theatre with previews beginning February 22, 2018. The stage adaptation of the hit animated Disney film will star Caissie Levy and Patti Murin.
Another film adaptation of the season, MEAN GIRLS, a comedy about rivalries among high school girls, will begin previews on March 12, 2018. Also a book by Tina Fey, we’re excited to see this cult classic take the stage on Broadway.
What do Sara Bareilles, John Legend, David Bowie, Steven Tyler, Cyndi Lauper, They Might Be Giants, Lady Antebellum and Panic! At the Disco all have in common? They have all contributed music to the new musical SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS, which is based on the hit Nickelodeon cartoon series and the undersea residents of Bikini Bottom. The official opening is December 4, 2017.
The revival of the truly original musical ONCE ON THIS ISLAND has been highly anticipated by many theatre fans. The show is about a peasant girl and her star-crossed romance with a young man from the wealthy side of the Caribbean island which is ruled by four island Gods. With soaring music by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, the show will open December 3, 2017.
Another revival, CAROUSEL, opens at the Imperial Theatre on Aril 12,2018 with previews beginning February 28, 2018. This Rodgers and Hammerstein classic has an all-star cast including Jessie Mueller, Renee Fleming, Joshua Henry and Betsy Wolfe.
Adding to the list of big-scale revivals this season is MY FAIR LADY, which will open April 19, 2018. The cast has yet to be announced but the stellar creative team includes Bartlett Sher and Christopher Gattelli.
THE BAND’S VISIT, the acclaimed Off-Broadway musical transfers to Broadway and tells the story of an Egyptian police band that arrives in Israel to play a concert. When a mix-up at the border leaves them stranded with no bus or hotel in sight, these unlikely travelers must seek the help of locals. Music and Lyrics by David Yazbek. The show opens November 9, 2017.
METEOR SHOWER starring Amy Schumer, Keegan-Michael Key, Laura Benanti and Alan Tudyk centers around “two couples who find themselves in marital freefall – and in a meteor shower –during one hot Ojai night.” Written by Steve Martin. The show opens November 29, 2017.
Jimmy Buffett comes to Broadway in ESCAPE TO MARGARITAVILLE. Starring Paul Alexander Nolan, this new musical “is the story of a tropical island resort and its part-time bartender, part-time singer, and full time charmer who thinks he’s got it all figured out. Until a beautiful career-minded tourist steals his heart and makes him question everything.” The show opens March 18, 2018.
And finally, Potter Heads all over will come out in droves to see HARRY POTTER AND THE CURSED CHILD, PARTS 1 AND 2. This is a Broadway transfer of the London phenomenon that continues the story of former boy wizard Harry Potter, his friends, and his son in a time-traveling adventure to save the world from the evil Lord Voldemort. The show opens April 22, 2018.
